General Manager, R&D Investment

The Cotton Research and Development Corporation (CRDC) delivers outcomes in cotton research, development and extension (RD&E) for the Australian cotton industry. 

A partnership between the Commonwealth Government and cotton growers, CRDC invests in world-leading RD&E to benefit Australia’s dynamic cotton industry, and the wider community. We invest in innovation and transformative technologies to deliver impact, and as an organisation we are ambitious, agile, and adaptive.

The Role

Due to a promotion, CRDC wishes to appoint a General Manager R&D to lead and direct the implementation of the R&D strategic plan, identifying needs, priorities and gaps, and building effective partnerships with key stakeholders to effectively manage CRDC’s R&D portfolio and deliver R&D outcomes. The General Manager will be a member of the CRDC Executive Team and contribute to the development and delivery of CRDC strategic plans.

Key Responsibilities

Key accountabilities for the position include the following:

  • Lead and direct the Research Investment Team in the brokering and procurement of research
  • Maximise the impact of research, monitor research investments for performance, and inform stakeholders of progress and issues relating to research.
  • Foster a culture of commercialisation across CRDC, leading the identification and development of commercialisation opportunities that create economic benefits for CRDC and industry
  • Direct and monitor delivery of CRDC’s portfolio of R&D projects to meet criteria and deadlines
  • Lead the proactive management of vendors to ensure delivery of outcomes
  • Build effective relationships with key industry stakeholders, including other rural R&D Corporations, research providers, industry and government to represent CRDC and influence outcomes


About You

We are keen to hear from you if you possess the following:

  • Tertiary qualifications in science, related field or equivalent experience
  • Demonstrated deep understanding of the major strategic issues for the cotton industry
  • Experience in managing, coaching and developing employees
  • Experience and expertise in leading R&D investment portfolios and managing multiple, complex projects
  • Knowledge and experience of commercialisation processes and IP management
  • Demonstrated ability to build relationships and collaborate nationally and internationally with both public and private partners, able to work flexibly and collaboratively with multiple and diverse stakeholders
  • Australian citizenship

Manager, R&D Investment - Narrabri or other cotton-growing location in NSW or Qld

The Role

The Manager Research & Development (R&D) will report to the General Manager R&D Investment, and will manage a portfolio of R&D investments to support achievement of CRDC’s strategic plan – from prioritisation through to delivery. This will include identification of research priorities, brokering and procurement of research collaborations, and delivery, monitoring and review of project and program performance.

About You

We are keen to hear from you if you possess the following:

  • Qualifications in Agricultural Science or equivalent
  • 5+ years’ experience in agricultural research, crop production or agronomy
  • Proven experience in project development, negotiation and management in a relevant industry sector OR experience in innovation and commercialisation processes
  • A good understanding of agricultural technology and its use in crop production
  •  The ability to build relationships and collaborate nationally and internationally with both public and private partners
  • An entrepreneurial mindset and self-starter, with well developed presentation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • The ability to work flexibly and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders
  • Australian citizenship


The location

While CRDCs head office is located in Narrabri NSW, CRDC is open to receiving applications from other regional NSW/Qld cotton producing locations
